A Growing Church for Growing Christians

The Pastor's Notes

September 1, 2008

A HOST OF RICH OPPORTUNITIES

I once heard a colleague say, “If the pastor knows everything that’s going on in the church, not enough’s going on!” I agree, but here are some of the things I am aware of:

Jim and Shawn Ramsay: Mission Society Missionaries

In both our 9:00am and 11:00 services on Sept. 7 Jim Ramsay will be speaking on World Missions. After more than a decade in Kazakhstan, Jim is now involved in supervising over two hundred missionaries in 35 countries. Saint Luke has been long and faithful supporters of the Ramsays through our Missions Committee and church budget. Pastor Phil visited the Ramsays four times when they were in Kazakhstan, including giving the first lectures at the seminary.

Jim and Shawn will also be speaking at the UM Men’s breakfast at 7:30 AM in the fellowship hall and in the sanctuary during Sunday School.

“Spa for the Soul” Women’s Retreat This Weekend

Our women’s retreat convenes Friday evening from 6-9:00pm and continues Saturday from 9am-3pm, with Suzy Speas from Ashland UMC as the keynote speaker, and a host of breakout sessions with Merri Scarborough, Alison Evans, Celeste Harris, Joanne Merck, and Trish Lunn. There will be plenty of laughter, great food, pampering, and door prizes, so come get your soul renewed!

Continuing Journey Worship Service Sunday Night at 6pm

Since the early 1970's when the white and black United Methodists merged into one conference, we’ve been working together at being one church with mutual appreciation. On Sunday evening at 6pm the five U.M. churches of Hartsville (Wesley, Twitty, Centenary, Kingsville, and Saint Luke) will gather for a preaching and communion service at Saint Luke with a joint choir and a skit from the youth. Rev. James Moore will be our preacher and Pastor Phil the celebrant.

A New Bible Study on the Book of Acts

Take time to read the brochure in this week’s newsletter. We begin Sept. 14 for the initial ten sessions. This will be an ongoing pastor-led study which blends an academic approach with practical application. Our goal is not just to get into the Scriptures but to get the Scriptures into us!

Come to the feast!
